Admixture Corrosion Inhibitors

Corrosion inhibitors are added to admixture mixtures because they either increase the time for corrosion to start, reduce the rate of corrosion or both. The dosage is dependent on many factors, including cement type, water-to-cement ratio, concrete location, weather conditions, external temperature and expected exposure to chlorides. Calcium nitrite is the most common corrosion inhibitor which operates by oxidising the more available form of iron to the more stable form. It should be used in a high volume (30 L/m3) with a w/c ratio of no higher than 0.45 in combination with pozzolan or slag.
