Water Reducers and Plasticisers

Plasticisers are used in concrete admixtures because they reduce the water/cement ratio and retard setting time without changing workability. Reducing the water/cement ratio also increases strength. Plasticisers enable the production of concrete with 15% less water, whereas superplasticisers enable the production of concrete with 30% less water. Plasticisers often additionally function as dispersants to increase the homogeneity of the concrete.
